Due to my inability to get to a hairdresser of late my bob has become much longer and is more often than not thrown up on top of my head for ease, so I'm contemplating letting it get longer still so I can really rock a bun (and even cutting in a sideways fringe for a change). Skin Saviour - Thermal Spring Water

I'm a HUGE fan of La Roche Posay. I really rate them as skin experts and the products I have tried have never failed to impress me. I'm currently working my way through their entire line. Next on my list to try is the anti-aging line and eye categories and baby products, due to my haggard appearance with all of these sleepless nights. So, on to my latest and greatest from them - The Thermal Spring Water. This water is at the very heart of the brand as it is the pure,unadulterated spring water that flows in La Roche Posay itself. Yes, it's a place! It contains a serious amount of naturally occurring selenium which protects the skin against free radicals and other minerals including calcium, zinc and copper to name a few and it has a neutral free pH so therefore is tolerable for all skins, all ages, all ailments.
I bought it in order to refresh my skin whilst I was in hospital having Anna. Maternity hospitals are very hot places - great for newborns, not so great for Mums, so with that in mind I spritzed and sprayed it's cooling mist on to my face throughout the day.When I came home, I forgot about it for a while until my skin started drying out and looking flaky due to hormonal changes paired with reacting to the practically 24 hour central heating (hey, it's cold, there's a newborn here!). So I remembered my Spring water and resumed the spritzing and my skin cleared completely. In fact, it even cleared the mini-breakout I was having (hormones again), so I have forgone the tap water to wash my face and now I'm just using this wonderful elixir after I cleanse.
I'm so happy that I finally tried it out, having been aware of it for ages but never getting around to using it. It's a keeper...

Guess who's back? Why, me of course!

Hello there you lot, I'm sorry for my disappearing act. I've been figuring out this whole Mother of two lark...it's busy let me tell you! I thought I had it sussed with one - I didn't!

Anyway, more of that in future posts, for now let's resume regular service with some lovely interiors to swoon over. Seeing as I'm back in the blogging saddle and and also looking for more official writing posts, I'm returning to my desk. Unfortunately, it's not actually a desk; it's the kitchen table, but I would love a proper desk with beautiful things around to inspire me. Have a look at these gorgeous work spaces (do you spot the dog in the pic above? How cute.)

I've always loved a pinboard (hence my addiction to Pinterest) and this sweet workspace... In my mind this is where Ellie Loves should come from!

Well Hello There 2012!

It's a brand spanking new year. All fresh and sparkly and full of new things that we don't yet know of. A lot of us are glad to see the back of 2011 for many varied reasons but we won't dwell on the bad stuff here at Ellie Loves, let's dwell on positivity and possibility (otherwise we'd lose our minds, right?!)
So, here's to a great new year for all of you. Try to heed the words above - I think it's a lovely wish list to work from. But above all, be nice to yourself (no horrible resolutions now, you hear? - none of us deserve punishment!), be nice to others and be happy in 2012.

Hello my lovelies! I'm just dropping in during a break in feeds/nappies/cuddles to wish you the happiest Christmas full of good cheer, love, peace and joy. All is well here; baby Anna is one week old and lovely, Lulu is coming around to the idea of her - gave her her first kiss yesterday after ignoring her since she came home! I am textbook tired, slightly emotional, prone to crying at anything sentimental especially this ad ( I just did again as I found it on You Tube!)

Anyway, I wish you all the very best for Christmas, thank you for reading, thank you for your sweet comments on Anna's arrival and thank you for being there and enjoying my musings. I've never met you, but you mean the world to me, my beautiful strangers!

If you've got a few minutes, listen to this as you potter about today. My Dad has put this on at home for every Christmas Eve of my life and now I'm playing it for my kids. Lovely life repetition...

She's here!

Hi Folks,
Ivan, Ellie's partner, signing in. Ellie asked me to do a quick post to let you guys know that Anna Isabella Sue Varian arrived earlier this morning. Ellie went to bed at about ten last night, after telling me to read more pregnancy books and calling to remind her parents to keep their phones switched on overnight. Her waters then broke at 12.07am and there was no question that things were under way.
We arrived in to Holles street maternity Hospital at 3. And with a relatively brief, but very intense, labour, Anna was born 4.48am, weighing 4.27kg (about 9 lb 6oz in old money). Which, given the time of year, is quite a small turkey but a fairly sizeable baby. She has lovely fair hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, which is quite the opposite to Lulu but exquisite nonetheless.
Quite disconcerting as she looks very similar to Ellie's brother, John.
Ellie should hopefully be home tomorrow and I'm sure she's fill you guys in in greater detail. In the meantime, here's a photo of the beautiful princess and a song from my music blog to soundtrack the moment.

My Perception of Perfection

Right, so I've had the latest foundation on the block, Chanel's Perfection Lumiere, for a few weeks now and haven't posted about it in order to give it a proper test on both mine and other skins. It's always hard to see past the hype with a product launch such as this, so I try to put my 'blogger blinkers' on and not read anything about it so I can make up my own mind!
So, what did I think? I think that it's not a replacement for Pro Lumiere - it is an entirely different foundation and Pro lovers such as myself who were loyal to it's more luminous finish, will miss it. This does, however, do exactly what it says on the tin; it lasts, it looks flawless and it comes in extra shades which is always a good thing. I would advise using a very small amount per application as it really spreads and too much will look cakey. Also, a brush is key to apply and buff it - fingers just don't do it justice.
It is semi-matte as opposed to Pro Lumiere's more satin finish but if your skin is in any way combination/oily this foundation will sit perfectly. If you are more dry or de-hydrated, I don't think you will love this. A lot of people found that Pro's finish didn't last all day and Chanel have obviously listened to those issues and addressed them with Perfection Lumiere. So what's my verdict? It's a very high quality foundation with a lot of thought behind it which may well fall into 'Hero Product' status but possibly just for normal/combination types. As with everything in life including makeup - you can't please all of the people all of the time!

It launches in Ireland on January 20th.

Bags To Love

I've been thinking about handbags lately and came to the realisation that I now must become reliant on cross body bags alone to hold my bits and bobs as my other hands will have to be free for my TWO children and their changing bags, buggies, coats etc etc etc! (still clearly having issues coming to terms with the old 'mother of two' concept!) Anyway, I digress, have you seen Mulberry's latest arrival? Meet Evelina (above) isn't she pretty? I think I would get along very well with her. Just sayin'...

This little patent messenger bag from Zara is lovely. Kind of retro, kind of now. It's not huge so forget using it as a dumping bag for all sorts of detritus but take it out to sling across your body when there is someone else to help with the baby kit!

Ah distressed metallics, how I love thee! This gorgeous bag called Orelia is from Red Direct and I think I'm in love with it. It is the perfect size for everyday... I'm seriously coveting it!

I was petting this little leather bag in Zara the other day and it may or may not have been added to a certain Christmas list! Still basically impractical for kid kit purposes but pretty nonetheless...

Making Up

Happy Monday my dears! I thought I would show you some shots of recent work I did. These are from a series of test shots that I did in the past few weeks. We were playing around with some new looks for this lovely model, Aisling. I love the one above, I saw Cindy Crawford in Duran Duran's new video for Girl Panic - she still looks so sexy so this look was my homage to her! I used a cream shadow from Essence on her eyes with my fingers for a slightly messy look and patted a Stila shadow in Pewter on top for added sheen. I contoured the cheeks with the Tom Ford Contour in shade 01 (essential for sexy smouldering!) and on her lips I used one of Ken Boylan's lip glosses from his Makeup/Play range in Nearly Naked which I think is a perfect nude pink - not too blank, just pretty!

This was our Elvis look. How cool is her quiff designed by Michelle O'Halloran! For her eyes I used a Smashbox nude shimmer on her lid and shaded into the crease with a blusher from Kohl in Sea Shell (blushers are not restricted to cheeks!) Last of all I patted a tiny bit of Ken Boylan's loose shimmer shadows in Luster just over the eye ball area of the lid. I wanted it to look sheeny and unstructured with no liner and minimal mascara. I made the brows quite strong with the Essence brow kit, shimmered up the cheeks with Benefit Coralista over Smashbox Pose blush and the vibrant lips are painted with Fuchsia by Revlon ColorBurst.

Love these lashes! They are the Rock Star Chic lashes by Ja'Maal Buster. They have a really strong vinyl sheen and jagged tips that work so well with an edgy look. On the lids I used the Catrice long wear cream shadow in shade 40 - one of my current to die for products that I'm wearing myself nearly every day. The sockets are shaded with Rain from Stila and the lashline is lined with Blacktrack gel liner by MAC. The cheeks are defined with Blushbaby from MAC and the red lip is Dubonnet also from MAC.

Classic and quite Christmassy!

The same as the first look but with added fringe...I love how much hair changes a face. False hair pieces are not for the fainthearted or for the wobbly of hand but when done well they are fantastic...

Bumping Along...

My darlings! I'm still here, haven't popped just yet but almost (due on the 18th!). I've had a few days with a sick Lulu and then my midwives told me to go into hospital to be scanned as they thought the baby had turned around to be breech which would mean my having an emergency Cesarean...not ideal but I got my head around it nonetheless. Happily it turns out that the baby has wiggled again and isn't quite in the right position but here's hoping all will resolve itself! Seeing as I'm due next week, my blogging will reduce for a few weeks but I'll be here three times per week with some guest posts from other bloggers thrown in too.

In the meatime and until things begin to rumble I have some nice makeup reviews and style inspiration posts coming up for you...

Skin Saviour - Huile Santal

Brrrr.... it's really getting nippy isn't it? My skin always acts accordingly and changes type from fairly normal/combination in the Summer to mainly dry in the Winter. I'm not crazy on this process but it's just what my skin does. It also changes how my foundation looks so I need to nurture my skin as I don't want to change to a totally different product. I'm currently wearing Teint Miracle by Lancome and loving it for it's medium and soft coverage, but my increasing dryness is making it look a little dull.
So! It's time for oils. Last week I wrote about the lovely Rosehip Oil from Trilogy but have since used up every last drop so I switched to this Huile Santal from Clarins and I'm finding it fantastic so far. I massage in a pearl sized drop at night after exfoliating gently with Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant and my skin is glowing and hydrated and bouncy looking (not quite a 'skincare' term I know!). It could be in part down to the facial massage which never fails to enliven sluggish celll turnover but I really think this oil has a lot to do with it.
Containing lavender, cardamom and soothing sandalwood oils, it has a definite aromatherapy aroma, which I happen to like but it soaks in quickly if you don't use too much so it's a winner for all you dry skinned ladies.
A little pricey at around €40 but one for the wish list perhaps??

Nail Treat

I've been using this Billionails treatment from Essie for the past few weeks as they had become a bit brittle (due to anxious biting!). I am happy to report that they look SO much better now and have truly had quite the growth spurt. Full of vitamins and fortifying ingredients, it is designed to be used on clean nails for a 90 day treatment period, which is a pretty long time but it acts really well as a base coat so you don't have to sacrifice your Christmassy colours at all. I'm not sure I'll go the entire 90 days, but I'll certainly file it under 'old reliable' on my bathroom shelf - I can see this little bottle getting lots of use.

Victorious Victoria

Last night at The British Fashion Awards, Victoria Beckham won the Best Designer Brand of the year. I for one am thrilled for her. I happen to love her designs and the fact that she has become appreciated by the notoriously cynical fashion industry is a very nice thing. There's been talk about who actually designs her pieces or the extent of her involvement, but I think that she has always been upfront in saying that she is not a trained designer, merely a fashion lover who has the opportunity to channel her ideas into these collections. So far, so fair in my view... Well done VB!

Healthy Pretty

This is one 'official' graphic from a cosmetics company that I actually like. In fact, I like it a lot. Oftentimes, they are too OTT, too airbrushed, too unattainable. But Bourjois have done themselves proud with this pretty image that is more Spring-like than Wintery, but a lovely healthy look nonetheless. It's a real 'me' look actually, and very similar to one I will be creating on a shoot this coming Sunday (my absolute last day of work before baby comes in three weeks!) I love the warm red lips and nude eyes - so wearable and gorgeous...
Now, is the product any good I hear you cry! In fact, it is. Very good indeed. It's another of these hybrid foundations that contain serum as well as makeup. They say it contains 'vitamin rich fruit therapy' which helps to even out the skin. I'm not too sure about that claim as I'm always dubious as to how much a foundation, that is designed to merely sit on the surface of the skin, can actually do for the state of your skin. But if you judge this merely as the makeup it is, you will be happy.

It has a nice smooth consistancy, medium coverage and a semi-matte finish that retains a slight glow. As with all of the Bourjois line, they offer good quality products at great price points so it's definitely one to check out. Keep in mind though, that if you can't find your shade, move on! Just because it's nice and cheap, you shouldn't sacrifice finding your exact shade.

Recipe Wall

Isn't this a sweet idea? Old recipes hung in frames for a kitchen wall. Doesn't everyone have old recipes that they have kept from Mums, grandmothers etc? What a good way to keep them current.
My Mum makes brown bread every day and she copies her own Mum's recipe and technique...such a nice way to keep something alive.

Attitude of Gratitude

It's World Thank You Day. Sometimes gratitude is one of most inarticulate emotions. It can be hard to say. It can be hard even to feel when times are a bit tough. But to say it makes you feel better; it's been proven as effective treatment for those suffering with depression or those just over-whelmed by life in general. God knows it's rough out there at the moment for so many people, but if you can find 10 things to be thankful for no matter how little or supposedly insignificant - they matter. Start making your list. Here's mine...

Today I am thankful for...

My parents who have battled through this year facing cancer, money worries and insecurity with grace, bravery, dignity and humour. They remain my sparkling idols.

My daughter Lulu, the light of my life, the apple of my eye, the point of it all.

Ivan for being Lu's Dad so well.

My ever-cool brother John for just being him.

My new baby who is arriving in three weeks. I can't wait to look at that little face and see those feet that are kicking me right now.

My best friends. A small number I like to call 'The Committee' - they keep me sane, make me laugh, give advice, make me tea (and wine when not pregnant!) They bear witness to my life. I don't have riches but I am wealthy with the company I keep.

My work as a makeup artist which I continue to love after all this time. I truly believe the saying that if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.

You lot! This blog which started as a hobby, has since become a true passion and I sincerely love hearing from you and finding beautiful things to show you.

Girl stuff. By this I mean makeup, clothes, magazines, nail polish etc. They are not just flippant - to me they are fun and make me feel like me when I feel a bit too much like a frazzled mother worrying about bills, health and serious things...

The kindness of strangers. By this I mean the people out there who are doing wonderful work to help others who are struggling. I have experienced this kindness myself lately and I now know that this is the energy that makes the world turn.

Be kind or be nothing.

Trilogy Skin Saviour

Brrrrr...I think Winter has finally landed. It's a freezing morning here and I have turned the heating on. It's a slippery slope till Spring my friends! The only inevitable outcome of this is drier skin (for me anyway) so it's time to load up the nourishment and for me this means buying my annual bottle of Rosehip Oil by Trilogy. It's organic and outrageously good for keeping skin looking and feeling good when switching between warm and colder temperatures. Massage it in night and day and watch that dry pelt turn to softer skin before your very eyes!

P.S. anyone living on Dublin's South Side should check out this Trilogy offer from the fab Select Stores (and have one of their to-die-for juices whilst there!)

I spotted these lovely pieces on the Loulerie site the other day and can't stop thinking about them. I think they will certainly make their way on to my wish list for Christmas. The stacking ring above is made of antique rose cut diamonds and 18k gold. Buy them one at a time and stack 'em up with each birthday or Christmas or any old excuse at all!

I love these initial pendants. Available in silver or gold and also with a semi-precious drop. Wouldn't they be lovely with separate ones with the initials of your kids for example? I think I'll drop some serious hints to my Santa!

Angel wings! I don't wear long earrings very much, but I think I'd make an exception for these. Aren't they pretty...

On The Fringe

Every year, and I mean every year, for some reason I become a little obsessed with fringes (or bangs for my US friends!) The thing is that I inevitably get one cut in, like it for about two weeks and then lose my mind with trying to keep it looking good. Mine tends to go a little wonky as I have a slight kink in that portion of my hair. So while I was working on a beautiful 1930's themed nautical wedding shoot the other day, the very talented hair dresser told me the trick to keeping a fringe looking ok... Simply blow dry it in the opposite direction that you want it to sit and then let it fall.... It will magically correct itself and look perfect!

You may know that, but it was news to me! So, now the fringe obsession is hotting up for another year...what to do? what to do?

Sweet Satisfaction

This shadow is one of MAC's latest Pro Longwear collection which began with foundations and concealers and then branched out into all areas of colour. I was sent a few bits to try out and I am most impressed indeed. Particularly with this shade called Sweet Satisfaction. It is a wheat-y, gold-y, champagne colour with the barest hint of flesh undertone. The up upshot of that means that it looks great on cooler skin tones who don't normally do so well with these type of shades. It's a superstar as a base shade with some deeper colours blended into the socket and outer corner of the eye but it is also fantastic on it's own as a veil of shimmer all over the lid. And does it last longer as the name suggests? I hear you cry... Well actually, yes it does. {Makeup Monday} INGLOT Cream Blush

This is my Blush Beloved at the moment. The AMC Cream blush by INGLOT is warming up my wintery cheeks something lovely these days! I really like the consistency - it's dewy without being oily so therefore is fantastic for all skins including those with oily/combination skins who have felt they have had to avoid this category of blushers before for fear of looking too shiny. These little beauts have a slightly 'cream to powder' feel without a powdery finish and lot's of pigment so a little goes a very long way. I have been applying mine with my fingers but they are also wonderful when swept over the cheek with a foundation brush or MAC's 130 brush is ideal for buffing it out seamlessly. I am wearing number 82 which is a deep, warm rose tone. Have a look at their full shade range here...there is a great choice and they are fantastic value at €14.

I had a lovely couple of days....my Mama Makeover courses were great. It's so nice to swap Mama stories as well as share makeup and beauty tips. I learn so much from my clients as well as them learning from me; it's a lovely exchange of ideas (and potty training tips)

Today is dark and dull. The clouds are low and full of rain, the lights are on and we're cooped up indoors. This has me craving bright, light interiors and sunny colours... Sometimes a white backdrop is the only way!

Max Factor Ageless Elixir

Lately I have been sent a few products to try out that are all aimed at the more senior of skins. Trying hard not to take offence I have put them through their paces nonetheless! The latest product to impress me is the Ageless Elixir from Max Factor. It's one of the latest hybrid foundations that encompasses skincare benefits. So the idea is that this is your serum and makeup in one. It has a slightly gel-like consistency that you think wouldn't blend into the skin too well; but it does. It actually feels quite like the silicone texture of the Smashbox primer. This element helps to smooth out the skin and it also contains SPF15 (like most things these days, but still worth mentioning) Overall it does indeed give a good look to the skin - fine lines do look a little more diffused. They claim that it will help with the skin's overall texture after time - I haven't worn it long enough to know that yet but it does have a nice feel and a medium coverage (they say it's full coverage - it isn't, but that's ok) Be aware that it does have an initial 'smell' when you pump it out. Quite floral and skincare-y but it fades on application.

Aaah! How did it get to Wednesday so soon? Life has taken over this week therefore impeding my blogging pursuits. I did miss you my lovelies but just couldn't quite get to you - I hope you understand.
My nesting instincts are shouting at me loud and clear. I have tidied my house from top to bottom, sorted out the clothes for the new baby, made list after list of things to do...it's so funny, this nesting time, you find yourself with a crazy energy for painting and putting up shelves in preparation for the impending arrival. Seriously, I am about to paint an old chest of drawers a gorgeous cherry red to house the babies bits and bobs. This is not the normal me! I'm crazy about these cakes designs and tablescape by Saipua. The cakes are so low-key but perfect; decorated with peonies, figs and other blooms they are just gorgeous!

I have a new obsession - blackboard paint! I love blackboards anyway, particularly in kitchens, but it's quite hard to find the perfect size and shape to make an impact. Often the ones you come across are too small - fine for notes and shopping reminders but not big enough to make a statement. That's where blackboard paint comes in! You can paint any surface; tables, walls, anything!

Love this entire wall with chalk illustrations...would only work in a very bright room obviously, but it's pretty cool!

This is an excellent way of using the paint - big squares on a white wall - one for adults, one for kids drawings!

It's pretty easy to get stuck in the old reliable 'neutral' palette in interiors. But it is a tad boring, no? I'm a huge fan of a pop of colour. It makes you feel better, it's whimsical and unique...See where you could paint a wall or piece of furniture and watch your home become more of an art installation of sorts! I love this deep blue wall...

Paint something bright! I'm in the process of painting an old white chest of drawers a deep cherry red to store the new baby's clothes. Add a flock of deer and birds at your leisure!

As most of you will know, I am a devotee of gallery walls, but what I love about this one is the mix of colour and styles (including kids art) and the yellow chair with matching stripe in the rug. Lovely stuff!

New Lip Balm Love

I'm not sure I agree with the old lip balm addiction myth but I do use one every day and this Moisture Plus by Carmex is my new favourite. I've always been a fan of Carmex. I like the slightly medicinal smell and it's moisturising qualities are really good. Now the old classic has been upgraded somewhat, they have launched new stick balms with colour tints as well as a clear one. They contain an SPF of 15 as well as vitamin E and Aloe. This results in them feeling very smooth and slick on the lips. I have the peach one which doesn't add much colour but a hint of a tint. It still has the reassuring tingly feeling after application and I really like it. I'm using it daily in fact! At only €5.99, I think they are well worth it and a great lip protector for the colder months.

Highlight at Chanel

This pretty compact is part of Chanel's Christmas lineup. Yes, that is the first mention of the C word on Ellie Loves but I can't hold back any longer - there are so many lovely things arriving in my letter box to try, so I have to share with you!( I'm going to tag the really lovely things in a 'gift guide' link so perhaps as the time draws nearer you can direct your significant others to that section on the blog and tell them to take their pick!)
Anyway, back to this sublime powder. It is a highlighting powder - you've seen many before now but this really stands out firstly for it's sheer gorgeousness; I almost didn't want to touch it for fear of ruining the design. But touch it I did. And was I glad! It imparts a very subtle highlight to the skin. The shade is perfectly judged - not too sheeny, not at all glittery, just right. The accompanying brush is fine to use; it has real hair so therefore picks up the powder properly and distributes it evenly and lightly over the skin.
In the day, just add a small bit to the top of the cheekbones for a subtle glow but at night, you can go hell for leather; add it to the bridge of the nose, the cupids bow, under the eyebrows. You can even dust it lightly all over the entire face for luminous loveliness.

RIP Steve Jobs... A Good Apple

By this stage you will have seen, read, and listened to reports and commentary on the death of Steve Jobs, and many of you will have seen, read and listened to it on the very technology that he dreamed into existence via his wonderfully random, unfettered mind that was full of possibility and positivity.

He was a man who wasn't afraid to push his boundaries and think about things differently. These people are few and far between and we should be thankful for their questioning minds, their insistence in their ideals, their stubborn souls, for they are the ones who improve our world just a little.

So dear Steve Jobs, I'm no techie, I don't really understand the full capabilities of my iPhone 4, I had the first generation iPod but didn't use it for ages as I was a little overwhelmed by it all (how many songs does it hold? how does it work?!) But the important thing is that you weren't overwhelmed. You Just Got It. You could see the future of how we listen and how we communicate. Essentially you put the whole world of information in our hands as we learnt to scroll and tap on our iPhone screens.

So thank you for the gadgets and the gizmos. Thank you for playlists and shuffle. Thank you for your inspirational Stanford Speech. And on behalf of my little girl, thank you for Toy Story. It's her favourite film.

My Makeup Courses

So, I've been working on my new course content for a while now and I have announced a few dates before I go to have this baby. I'd love you to take a look at my site and see what you think. I have three courses that I think suit most people's needs. I teach them all with a huge mix of brands so you are getting my completely non-biased opinion.
The Complete Beauty Edit is a full day course where I teach four basic and beautiful makeup looks with my choice of the best products. Two for day, and two for night. You will then do two of the looks on yourself with my help. I like to keep it nice and small so everyone can relax and feel comfortable. I only take 8-10 people at a time as more than that and it can get a bit chaotic! I teach this one in the lovely studios of the LA Makeup Academy.

Beauty On A Budget is a three hour course where I showcase my picks of the best of the budget beauty brands. This is a bit of a crusade for me as I really feel that people are stumped as to how to find quality products at the cheaper end of the market. But the truth is that there are fantastic things out there once you know what you are looking for and learn how to choose it yourself without the help of sales assistants. On this course I teach an easy and pretty daytime look and a stunning night time look and I truly believe that you can fill your makeup bag with under €100 instead of spending a fortune (that no-one has anymore, right?)

My third course is another three hour session that is particularly close to my heart - Mama Makeover. As a mum, I truly understand how things change during pregnancy and particularly after the arrival of the small ones; you are exhausted and you look it! You feel under pressure for time, sanity and everything else and it's vitally important to do something for yourself even if it's only minor. You can learn what beauty products are really effective to brighten and nourish your skin and even if you only have two minutes each day, they can make a difference. I focus on multi-purpose products and quick makeup tricks to make you look alive.. you may feel like a shadow of your former self but you won't look it!

{Makeup Monday} Smashbox Studio Skin

I've tested the Studio Skin foundation from Smashbox out over the past few weeks and I like it a lot. I am normally so wary of the 'longlasting' category of foundations as they can look so artificial on the skin. So it was with a degree of trepidation that I applied this to my own skin, figuring that I would have to actually wear it myself to test it's claims... and it was fine! It was more than fine - it was good in fact!
It has a much dewier finish and feel than MAC's Studio Finish Fluid which I would see as this product's main competitor. It has a medium to full coverage and manages to retain the soft dewy finish for hours and although I don't think I actually wore it for the entire 15 hours, I can vouch for it's good staying power. It's a winner for normal to dry or combination skins. I wouldn't use it on a very dry skin as it may look a bit heavy. They do a good range of shades too. I wear the palest 1.1 and it is suitably pale with no yellowy hue. It's €39 and I think it's worth it.

{Wedding Wednesday} White, Stone & Taupe

The week is running away with me, my dears! So here is yesterdays wedding post - today! I'm loving all these stone, taupe and natural tones at the moment and I swooned when I saw these gorgeous mis-matched bridemaids...

Luminosity In A Bottle

Can your skin be in love as well as your heart? Well mine is. I was sent this Vital Light Serum by Clarins to try a few weeks back and I feel I've waited enough time to ascertain it's effects on my skin. So without being overly effusive (I hope!) - it's bloody brilliant. I don't actually have a huge issue with dark spots, just a few larger than average freckles and a bit of pigment around my chin that I keep at bay with my SPF so I guess I can't really vouch for it's totally transformative powers in that department. But what it has done for me is make my skin look a lot brighter and plumper. Clarins say that it helps with 'deep luminosity' and you know what? I believe them! It contains the wonder ingredient Hyaluronic acid to help you skin produce collagen and Cangzhu extract which helps with cellular metabolism. So basically it plumps up and gets your skin turning around quicker so there is less time to look haggard as it is repairing itself all the time. Bear in mind that this is aimed at people in their mid-late thirties plus, so all you fresh faced readers can skip this one for now (or take notes and buy it for your Mum for Christmas!)

It's a pricey serum at almost €70 but a little goes a long way, I'm expecting mine to last months.

Makeup Days

Good Morning my lovelies, how was your weekend? I've had a hectic few makeup days with lot's more to come; it's a bit exhausting hauling this bump around with my giant makeup kit but fun nonetheless.
I was making up some lovely ladies at The Great Rail Sale in Dublin yesterday and got to meet so many nice makeup fans (including some readers of Ellie Loves!) Here I am applying a beautiful burgundy lip shade to Nicola. I am crazy about this shade on someone with her colouring - it's a strong statement lip that feels a bit more fashion forward than the classic reds...

In case you are wondering, I kept her eyes very clean and bright with an oyster toned shadow. I shaded into the socket with a pale grey and lined with a black gel liner. The cheeks are warmed slightly with a pale matte peach tone and on the lips I lined with a Stila lip liner in no 12, I then added the Revlon matte lipstick in Wine Not and Lancome's Raisin Juicy Tube on top to give it a lift.

Oh Honey!

I've come over all Winnie The Pooh this week with my penchant for honey! I'm eating Manuka honey smeared on toast because it's delicious and also because it's so bloody good for you (said to ward off winter colds like nothing else) I am also washing myself in this Ultra Rich Cleansing Gel from French brand Nuxe which is made up of honey and sunflower oils. It's soap-free so non-drying and the smell, oh the smell! It's divine...

I love the simplicity of a bunch of plain lavender for a bouquet, and the grosgrain ribbon is perfect too...

{Makeup Monday} Max Factor Liquid Effect Pencil

Oh, I love a good quality pencil! Thankfully, the majority of brands are upping their game when it comes to pencils and they are ticking the boxes of requirements. For the record, what you need from a pencil is a buttery texture so it glides on to the skin without dragging or indeed, poking. A deep level of pigment so the colour is strong and lasts long rather than an insipid colour that tends to disappear in a few blinks.

Max Factor's Liquid Effect Pencils are good examples of pencils in the 'better' end of the scale. They perfom as they should and they leave a lovely, long lasting effect on the eye. (Not sure about the 'liquid effect' though as to me they are just a great kohl pencil)

I am addicted to the Violet Voltage shade which is deep aubergine shade. I use it both as a liner and as an eyeshadow base. It is smooth enough to sketch all over the lid and blend out with the attached smudger at the end of it. Apply a complementary shadow or metallic pigment on top for a gorgeous and easy effect. I think that these pencils can certainly hold their own against top brands and they definitely rival Armani's pencils in my view (and I have been pretty un-swayable when it comes to Armani before now!)

I walked into Ecco for possibly the first time the other day. I was actually going in to take a look at the kiddie shoes as I had always classed the brand (wrongly) as one for older people or younger ones, not fashion savvy types... So imagine my surprise to see a great selection of boots that tick all the boxes in style terms. I think these ankle boots are very cool with a classic feel. Great with skinnies and thick wool tights and skirts...

They come in three great shades - sepia, black and this olive grey colour which is kinda interesting...

I liked these knee high flat boots a lot too. They're not going to set the world alight with fashion fire but they are classic with a good heel height and toe shape and they are a nice width so they don't gape on the calf.
Also, at the risk of sounding really old, and for this I apologise - but I have to tell you they are really comfy!

I like this idea and it would be pretty easy to create your own version...just get a load of sheet music and arrange in a collage, put in a cool frame and there you go - musical walls!

It is always slightly odd watching the Spring shows when you're just beginning to relish the idea of Winter but great design is great design - any time of year so it's not that hard to embrace the colours that we will inevitably be craving next year. I really like this citrus collection by Christian Siriano... what amazing brights!

Bourjois 10 Sleep Effect - Really?

I have to admit to laughing at myself because I made an audible 'Oooh' when I spotted this bottle of foundation on the Bourjois stand! I generally like to think of myself as someone who doesn't fall for a marketing 'line' especially when it comes to makeup. But the '10 hour sleep effect' got me. Hook, line and sinker. Seeing as I haven't had anything close to ten hours of sleep in two and a half years and after December I will get decidedly less as I'll up for night feeds again, I though I'd give this little peach bottle a whirl...
I am a genuine fan of Bourjois. I think their products are real performers in the budget beauty category so I had a certain amount of confidence in this before I started with it. But I do know that my skin provides quite the challenge due to the tiredness of pregnancy mixed with running after a toddler as well as working. To say I'm a Mum on the run is an understatement! What I mean by that is that I was quite willing to let it off the hook if it didn't perk my skin up...I would test it on others as well, before I judged it completely.
No need!! It's absolutely great! I am honestly so impressed with it and I really think my skin looks better. I dare say it looks even better than it does in my usual MAC Face & Body (which I will never talk down as it is wonderful) but this is so good for such a good price (€13.99)
I find the coverage to be light to medium - don't expect heavy coverage. You can layer within reason without it caking and although it doesn't seem to contain pearly bits - it seriously brightens my skin. They say this is down to it's content of vitamins E, F and B5. It's oil free too which is great for combination skins. I bought shade 71 which is the palest and it is good for me. Being a budget brand, they don't have a huge shade extension but if you slot into one of their shades, you should be happy with this product. Best applied with fingers for perfect blending, this is one product I will continue to use both for myself and on my clients and makeup courses.

Be still my beating heart...these dresses are perfection! I have always had a thing for Italian designers, Le Spose di Gio. They design ethereal, elegant dresses in wonderful fabric that are miles away from the structured, bustier topped, big skirted dresses that I am extremely tired of...

Isn't this two piece so beautiful, it looks relaxed and low key yet so very perfect for a bride. Look at the swish in the fabric....Heaven!

I adore this one. A lot! No detail, just a perfect cut and sheer, fluid lines...

They have an atelier in London and one day I hope to visit it if only to feel these amazing dresses (and perhaps to have a little try on!)
